Clothing sample and production timeline

A stage-by-stage plan from brief and pattern through samples, testing, bulk production, inspection, and delivery—with room for revision.

Construction should lead the factory search. Conceptual TAC image; it does not depict a named manufacturer or production order.

How to use this shortlist

Begin with the production question, not the promise.

Production time is not one block. It is a chain of dependencies: brief, costing, materials, patterns, samples, fit, testing, purchase order, pre-production approval, bulk, inspection, and freight.

A realistic calendar includes decision time on the brand side. A factory cannot hold a delivery date indefinitely while comments, deposits, or materials remain open.

Development comes before the production clock

The first estimate should separate pattern and sample development from bulk lead time. A quote that says “four weeks” may refer only to sewing after all materials and approvals are ready.

Map every dependency and owner. The brand may owe the tech pack, comments, labels, payment, or testing decision; the factory may owe material booking, pattern, sample, revised costing, and production slots.

A quote becomes useful when material, finish, and construction are specific. Conceptual TAC image; not manufacturer evidence.

Sample stages have different jobs

A prototype explores construction. A fit sample tests measurements and movement. A sales sample may support market activity. A size set checks grading. A pre-production sample should represent approved bulk materials and construction.

Not every product needs every named stage, but combining stages should be deliberate. Keep dated comments and measurement changes so one approval does not silently overwrite another.

The product’s actual use determines the questions a factory must answer. Conceptual TAC image; not a selected factory’s work.

Bulk begins after the risk is understood

Before cutting, confirm materials, shade, trims, labels, packaging, measurements, tolerances, testing, inspection, and shipping marks. The pre-production meeting or record should make those decisions recoverable.

In-line inspection can find a drifting measurement or construction problem before the entire order is complete. Final inspection is important, but it is expensive to discover a systemic error at the end.

Plan backward from a usable delivery date

Work backward from when stock must be available—not merely when it leaves the factory. Add export documents, freight, customs, receiving, quality review, photography, and contingency.

If the launch date cannot move, reduce complexity or begin earlier. Compressing the calendar by skipping evidence usually moves the delay from development into defects, freight, or customer service.

Questions for the first call

What to confirm before paying a deposit.

  1. Which stage begins only after payment or material arrival?
  2. How many sample rounds are normal for this construction?
  3. What date must the pre-production sample be approved?
  4. Which tests or inspections can hold bulk release?
  5. Which holidays, capacity periods, or freight routes affect the plan?

Lead times are order-specific and change with complexity, capacity, materials, holidays, approvals, and freight. Treat this as a planning sequence, not a promised calendar.
