The criterion
Choose by material and construction.
With lighting for art, material is not a finishing detail. It determines how the object feels, behaves, ages, and whether its construction can support the use you expect from it.
What to look for
- A material whose weight, texture, and durability suit the intended use.
- Construction details that are visible enough to judge rather than hidden behind styling.
- A clear relationship between the material, the way the object is made, and its price.
Questions worth asking
- What will touch, flex, carry weight, or receive the most wear?
- Can the construction be maintained or repaired?
- Does the material improve with use—or simply deteriorate?
